LEVEL Nightclub Press Release
Taking the party to the
next Level
It may not be in a fresh location,
but a new club in town is looking to change the landscape of Front Street's bar
scene.
Co-owners Barnaby West and Jerome Overbey bought the old Square One last month -
and with a new colour scheme and décor - have dubbed it Level Nightclub.
They said they'll also move away from Square One's mainstay of house and techno
music to a more user-friendly, popular sound.
"It's more of a Top 40, hip hop and reggae vibe," Mr. West said. "We're going to
leave the DJ to play what the crowd wants to hear."
The crowd they're appealing to is anyone out looking for a good time, regardless
of their age (18 and above, of course) or musical tastes.
"We want to provide a fun, safe environment," Mr. Overbey said. "The music will
dictate the crowd ... I wanna see everyone from 18- or 19-year-olds to
65-year-old tourists enjoying themselves.
"[Some bars] try to eliminate a certain type of person, and that can get you
into trouble [in attracting a crowd]," he added.
He also said that music theme nights are in the works, but for now they'll be
playing rock, reggae and everything in between.
Revelers familiar with Square One will immediately notice the difference in the
new club's décor, Mr. West said.
They've painted over the old club's red with a dark blue shade and got rid of
the furniture, replacing it with café style stand-up tables.
"We've eliminated 90 per cent of seating and opened up the floor space," Mr.
West said, the intent being to get people up and moving to the music.
Asked if there was a void in the island's nightlife that they're looking to
fill, Mr. Overbey said, "There's nothing really lacking [in the bar scene] ...
we're just a new initiative to that."
He and Mr. West said they've received a lot of support from people who are
rooting for the two local boys to run a successful operation in a venue that has
had trouble in recent years staying afloat. The location was called Blue Juice
up until about two years ago, when it changed hands and became Square One.
It remains to be seen how it will do as Level, but the new owners' familiarity
with the bar scene means they should have little problem creating a club that is
appealing to the majority of party-goers.
Prior to buying the venue, Mr. West ran a pool maintenance business, while Mr.
Overbey bartended at Splash and the White Horse tavern.
Both quit their jobs to focus on running Level full-time.
For the time being, the club will be open informally from Wednesday to Saturday,
but during the peak tourist season, they'll be catering to party-goers seven
nights a week.
The pair said they're throwing an official opening party on the Mexican holiday
Cinco de Mayo holiday on Saturday, May 5th.
